Minneapolis: tanker forces passage among protesters, driver arrested

A “very disturbing” incident, according to the police. A tank truck attempted Sunday, May 31, to force its way through the middle of a procession of thousands of demonstrators on a bridge in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota in the United States, forcing the massive intervention of the forces of the order. No injuries are to be deplored according to the first elements of the investigation.

“A priori no demonstrator was injured,” said local police in a statement. The driver of the truck was injured but his life was not in danger. He was taken to hospital and placed under arrest. The demonstration, linked to the death Monday, May 25 of George Floyd, a black man, at the hands of the police, had left in the middle of the day of the Capitol in Saint-Louis, where the Parliament of Minnesota sits. Composed of about 2000 people, it was heading in a peaceful atmosphere towards the center of Minneapolis.

He looked upset, he honked his horn and kept walking

All along the route, police and soldiers from the National Guard blocked the surrounding roads to secure the procession. It was initially unclear how the truck driver approached the protesters. As they crossed a motorway bridge, he advanced his truck into the middle of the crowd. According to a witness interviewed on the local channel KSTP, demonstrators who came by bicycle threw their bicycles under his vehicle in an attempt to stop him.

“He looked upset, he honked and continued to walk,” the young man told AFP, who only gave his first name, Kyle. Very quickly, dozens of police vehicles arrived with screaming sirens and pushed the demonstrators back off the bridge. The situation remained very confused for a long time, one hour before the start of the curfew imposed by the authorities to prevent the demonstrations from degenerating into riots.
