Minneapolis. After the death of the African American George Floyd in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis, the local police chief wants to completely change his force.
Among other things, negotiations with the police union about the officials’ employment contracts will be terminated in order to completely reorganize them, Medaria Arradondo said on Wednesday. Only in this way can there be more transparency and real reform.

Many observers see the Minneapolis police union as the real obstacle to force reform. Arradondo said it is sobering when there is sufficient reason to suspend an officer and then get a third party to let him or her go back to work.
More transparency and new approaches
Among other things, Arradondo wants to examine how more transparency can be stipulated in the contracts for sensitive incidents or the use of force. There will also be new approaches to identify problem officials and hold them accountable.
“This work has to be transformative, but I have to do it right,” said Arradondo, who became the first black Minneapolis police chief in 2017 to lead the force.
