Ministry of Health Divides Monkeypox Cases in Five Groups

Monkeypox is like any other disease that can heal on its own.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Dermatologist and Venereologist from the Sulianti Saroso Infection Center Hospital (RSPI), Ni Luh Putu Pitawati, revealed that the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has divided five groups in cases of monkeypox. One of them is a suspect who has a skin rash, fever, and enlarged lymph nodes.

“The Ministry of Health conveys that it has divided five groups (in the case of monkeypox). Those are suspects if the patient has an unexplained skin rash,” he said, Tuesday (9/8/2022).

He added that the suspect group also had a fever above 38 degrees Celsius. In addition, it is accompanied by enlarged lymph nodes that can be found in the back folds of the head or armpits. The patient is also accompanied by symptoms of headache and then aches all over the body and body weakness.

Then, the second group is probable if a person has met the criteria for a suspect and is accompanied by the addition of the criteria for direct contact with patients who are confirmed to have monkeypox. For example, travelers to endemic countries monkey pox and indeed being treated for monkeypox infection.

Then, he said the third group were confirmed patients who met the criteria for suspect or probable and were confirmed by the results of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) examination of the lesions and the nasopharynx and the results were positive. Then, the fourth group was discarded, namely patients who were suspected and after a PCR examination the results were negative.

“The last or fifth is the close contact group which is confirmed, there is close contact with positive monkeypox patients, either skin contact, face-to-face contact without (using) personal protective equipment (PPE),” he said.

He explained that monkeypox is actually like any other disease that can heal on its own. So, people whose body condition is fit will have an infection healing process that can heal itself. However, in certain groups there is a decrease in the immune system, either due to infection or due to therapy.

“Then pregnant women and children or the elderly (elderly) who are included in the group experiencing decreased immunity need to be monitored if they are infected with monkeypox,” he said.

He added that monkeypox has become a global health emergency since May 2022 because many monkey pox case in England and the United States. It was recorded that as of July 2022 there were 88 countries that reported cases of monkeypox in their country. This means that the number of countries reporting monkeypox has increased since July 2022.

“So, that’s what underlies the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) which sees monkeypox that needs to be watched out for and needs to get treatment so that no further transmission occurs,” he said.
