Ministry of Foreign Affairs Denies Russian Foreign Minister Walking Out of FMM G20 Meeting in Bali

This refutes rumors circulating that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov walked out of the foreign ministers’ meeting (FMM) G20 Bali.

Earlier, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, speaking on the eve of the meeting, said Lavrov was absent for most of the afternoon session of the G20 meeting in Bali. He left the room after giving his gaze.

“Lavrov was neither the first nor the last (to deliver his speech). All I can say is that he was absent during the day. He spoke in the morning, he didn’t stay to follow the speaker, he left,” Borrell told reporters.

Lavrov, who agreed to be interviewed by journalists during the day, denounced Western countries for his massive criticism at the G20. Lavrov said the forum was too focused on the Ukraine-West war squandered an opportunity to tackle global economic problems.

After the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting or FMM, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said participants expressed deep concern about the humanitarian consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war and its global impact on energy and food financing.

“Participants called for consistent full compliance with the charter and applicable international law. Several members expressed their condemnation of the invasion,” said Retno in a press statement.

Retno added that the delegates also called for the need to ensure safe and unhindered access for the delivery of Ukrainian humanitarian aid. In addition, participants are also committed to exploring further G20 collaborations to strengthen global food, energy security, including with the United Nations system.

The war in Ukraine has been going on since February 2022. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has angered Western countries by imposing economic sanctions. The United States supports Ukraine against Russia by sending weapons aid.

Russia is accused of being the root cause of energy, food and economic problems after Ukraine was attacked. Moscow rejects the Western countries’ accusations.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has also caused friction in the G20 forum. Western countries have proposed to Indonesia as the presidency G20 this year not to invite President Vladimir Putin to the Bali summit in November 2022, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Instead, Indonesia was asked to invite Ukraine.
