Ministry of Commerce Seizes Hoarded Onions, Video Circulating Online Is Old: Official Confirmation

RIYADH – Confirmation that the video circulating on social media is old, showing footage of six loads of onions being hoarded by the Ministry of Commerce in an attempt to create an artificial shortage in the market and increase prices. The fake video is being circulated with footage of Ministry of Commerce officials seizing 100 tons of onions hidden in six lorries near Aziziya Wholesale Market in South Riyadh. It became clear that this incident happened three years ago during the corona epidemic. On that day, Al-Iqbariya channel broadcast the footage of the Ministry of Commerce seizing the hoarded onion stocks. This video is now being circulated on the pretext that it is a new incident. This video has nothing to do with the current onion crisis in the local market.
Three years ago, the Ministry of Commerce seized the onion stock belonging to three trading companies. The onion stock was hoarded by the owners to create an artificial shortage in the market and raise the price. In this case, the Ministry of Commerce summoned the owners of the establishment for questioning and handed over the case against them to the concerned department for taking legal action. The seized onion stocks were later distributed to the local market at a fair price through the intervention of the ministry.
