“It is absurd to import fruits and vegetables. There is a lack of rules for the trade in agricultural products and food, we are preparing such a bill,” Minister of Agriculture Kiril Vatev told BNT.

According to him, the specificity of the Bulgarian market is that 70% of sales are promotional, which is not good either for traders or manufacturers.

“That’s why rules are needed to introduce a regulation of commercial relations along the entire food chain from the field to the store shelf. There is no danger of GMO foods entering, GMOs are not produced in Europe,” added Kiril Vatev.

“This year, our entire grain production is at a definite loss of at least 20 percent,” noted the Minister of Agriculture.

“There is no problem with wheat, at this moment, compared to 2022, Bulgaria has exported 2 million tons of wheat more, there is with sunflower, as Bulgaria currently does not import sunflower from Ukraine. There is no data on contamination of Ukrainian sunflower,” said Kiril Vatev.

He emphasized that quality is the key, and price is a function of quality. Bulgaria is one of the best in Europe with the fewest food poisonings, the Minister of Agriculture also commented.
