Governor Hochul issues her first state of emergency for the state of NY in the face of serious damage caused by Ida – Telemundo New York (47)

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared her first state of emergency early Thursday about an hour after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency in all five boroughs because of ” a historic weather event with record city-wide rainfall, brutal flooding and dangerous conditions on our roads. ”

The mayor said that approximately 5,300 customers are without electricity. The swath of severe weather also prompted the FAA to issue a “ground stop” at all three New York City area airports.

Hochul and de Blasio’s remarks come on the heels of a first flash flood emergency that was issued earlier Wednesday night when the remnants of Hurricane Ida hit the east coast. Forecasters say the emergency for New York City, Brooklyn and Queens remains in effect until 3 a.m. Thursday.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy also declared a state of emergency Wednesday night.

Central Park recorded 3.15 inches of rain between 9 and 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Heavy rains caused Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport to suspend all flights. In Newark, the air traffic control tower was evacuated amid tornado warnings and the airport’s ground floor experienced “severe flooding.”

“All flight activity is currently suspended and travelers are strongly advised to contact their airline for the latest information on resuming flight and service,” the airport tweeted. “Passengers are being diverted from flooded areas to ground level.”

Meanwhile, in Manhattan, local transportation also collapsed and all subway lines suspended service.

“All train services are currently suspended due to severe weather,” transport officials tweeted. “Stay tuned for updates.”
