Middle East in turmoil, UN asks Israel-Iran to refrain

NEW YORK United Nations (UN) ask Iran and Israel to avoid any action that could increase the tension in Middle East after the attack on tanker Mercer Street on the Arabian Sea. The announcement was made by UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric at a press conference.

“It is important for all parties involved or interested in this to avoid escalating actions or rhetoric that could exacerbate a tense situation,” Dujarric said. Sputnik, Friday (6/8/2021).

Meanwhile, UN Security Council will hold a meeting to discuss the attack. Britain will use the meeting to increase pressure, although the 15-member body is not expected to take any action.

Last Tuesday, English told the UN Security Council it was “very likely” Iran used one or more drones to carry out the tanker attack that killed two of its crew members, a Briton and a Romanian.

“There is a lot of conflicting information. The analysis is ‘very likely’, which we completely reject. We need to establish the facts… we don’t need to rush to any conclusions or actions without having evidence of what happened,” the deputy said. Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Dmitry Polyanskiy was quoted as saying by Reuters.

On Sunday the United States and Britain said they would work closely with their allies to respond to the attack.

“We will do what is necessary to ensure that there is accountability in this regard and that Iran is identified and addressed at the Security Council,” said US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

Earlier, Israel warned it was ready to strike Iran over the alleged attack on the tanker off the coast of Oman to hold it accountable.

Tehran has denied involvement in the attack on Mercer Street, a Liberian-flagged Japanese oil product tanker managed by Israel’s Zodiac Maritime.
