The Competition Makers Authority (Competition and Markets Authority, CMA)the body that regulates the market in the United Kingdom, has determined that the purchase could alter the future of the industry of video games in the cloud and therefore, has decided to block it.

Through a statement on a UK government page, it was explained:

“The final decision to avoid the deal comes after Microsoft’s proposed solution failed to effectively address concerns in the cloud gaming sector, outlined in the Competition and Markets Authority’s interim findings published in February. .

“Microsoft signed a $68.7 billion deal to buy Activision, one of the world’s most popular video game publishers, in January 2022. The CMA released an in-depth review of the deal in September 2022, and in February 2023 discovered tentatively that the merger could make Microsoft even stronger in cloud gaming, stifling competition in this growing market.”

According to the text, the acquisition would put Microsoft in a beneficial position within the cloud gaming industry, opening the possibility of making Activision/Blizzard videos only available for their platforms.

In recent months, both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of the United States and the European Commission have also shown reluctance about the acquisition.

Microsoft currently owns between 60 and 70% of cloud gaming services. According to the statement, the market value of the online gaming industry will be £11 billion ($13.7 billion) by 2026.
