Microsoft promises technical improvements for backward compatible games

At the start of the Xbox Series X, Microsoft not only promises thousands of games that should work immediately with the new console thanks to downward compatibility. Because in addition, the titles of past generations should also be spiced up graphically and technically automatically as soon as they are used on the Series X.

In one Blog post Jason Ronald, Partner Director of Program Management for the Xbox Platform Team, promises higher frame rates and resolutions. For a number of selected titles, the aim is to double the frame rate, which should make some of them run at up to 120fps. In addition, one wants to use a so-called HDR reconstruction technology to realize an HDR display even with games that originally did not offer the high dynamic range at all.

According to its own statements, Microsoft has already invested more than 100,000 test hours in downward compatibility and plans to use the time until the release to make the Xbox Series X “the most compatible console ever”. Here is a summary of how to improve the gaming experience of older software with the new console:

  • More performance: Downward compatible games run natively on the Xbox Series X hardware and use the full power of CPU, GPU and SSD – no boost mode, no downclocking.
  • Higher resolution and improved frame rate and quality: In many cases, the performance of the titles increases many times over compared to the original version. Techniques such as the Heutchy method enable high-resolution rendering up to 4K quality. The integration of anisotropic filtering serves to improve the image quality and brings old classics to a modern standard. In addition, a number of selected titles support doubling the frame rate from 30 fps to 60 fps or from 60 fps to 120 fps.
  • NVME-SSD: Due to the massive leap in performance of the tailor-made NVME SSD, which the Xbox Velocity Architecture drives, loading times of downward compatible titles shorten considerably.
  • HDR reconstruction technology: New functions directly at the platform level further increase the performance of the games, including the innovative HDR reconstruction technology with which games automatically receive HDR support.
  • Quick Resume: You use the new Quick Resume feature not only in new titles, but also in beloved classics with downward compatibility. With Quick Resume, you can resume games at the push of a button and jump back to where you left off – with several titles at the same time.
