Microsoft Called Apple Can Damage the Gaming Business, How Can?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Microsoft also commented on the dispute over blocking the game developer Fortnite, Epic Games by Apple. This policy can damage the gaming business.

Apple plans to block the Epic Games developer account because it is considered to violate Apple’s internal rules in the App Store. This policy can make the Unreal Engine application no longer be used on iOS.

The Unreal Engine, a type of game engine, is a widely used set of technologies that provide a framework for the creation of three-dimensional graphics. Epic licenses machines to companies that use the technology for a fee.

“If Unreal Engine cannot support iOS or macOS games, Microsoft will be asked to choose between leaving its customers and potential customers on the iOS and macOS platforms or choosing a different game engine when it prepares to develop new games,” said Kevin Gammill, General Manager of Microsoft. quoted from CNBC International, Monday (24/8/2020).

He added “If Apple decides to stop supporting Epic to develop and support the Unreal Engine on iOS or macOS it will hurt gamers and gamers.”

While there are alternative game engines, Kevin Gammill says there are ‘very few’ options that share many of the same features and functionality as the Unreal Engine.

Previously, Epic Games sued Apple for blocking the company’s developer account. This lawsuit was filed in the Northern District Court of California, USA.

Apple decided to block Epic Games because the company made in-games payment instruments at Fortnite, which made it unnecessary for the company to pay a fee of 30% for each transaction and could offer price discounts of up to 10-20%.

So far, Epic Games has indeed considered the 30% fee per transaction to be burdensome for developers. But for Apple, the fee is for developing applications and the company benefits from providing an application store.
