REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Microbiology expert at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Yeva Rosana, emphasized that there is no connection between injections vaccine Human papillomavirus (HPV) with the possibility of women experiencing infertility. This is because vaccination aims to prevent infection.

“The goal of vaccines is to prevent infection. Also, if you are already infected, it is hoped that the vaccine will not make the sufferer worse. Temporary infertility “This happens because of an untreated infection, of course both are irrelevant,” he said in Jakarta, Wednesday (11/10/2023).

He gave the example of a case of gonorrhea sufferers who are at high risk of developing cervical cancer. In that case, he said, adhesions to the reproductive organs actually occurred due to bacterial infection that causes gonorrhea which prevented the egg cells from meeting sperm.

“Once again that is misinformation. The vaccine forms antibodies to fight the virus before infection occurs, visible through various body responses, such as mild pain, redness. “The adhesions that cause infertility are the effects after infection,” he said.

He explained immunization HPV to prevent disease cervical cancer caused by HPV infection with a success rate of 100 percent if two doses are given to girls aged 9-13 years. Therefore, he appealed to women with high risk factors for HPV infection, either through sexual activity with more than one partner or unhealthy lifestyles, such as smoking, should get the HPV vaccination.

HPV immunization activities are a form of Indonesia’s commitment to preventing cervical cancer as evidenced by the inclusion of this immunization in the National Immunization Program since 2023. HPV immunization is given in two doses to girls before graduating from elementary school/MI or equivalent in the School Immunization Month (BIAS) activity every August .
