Mexico fan who hit USMNT’s Gio Reyna with a bottle and is being prosecuted

The fan who threw a rocket at Giovanni Reyna in the CONCACAF Nations League final between the US men’s national team (USMNT) and Mexico on Sunday was arrested and is now facing criminal charges, according to stadium officials.

Reyna was beaten as USMNT player Christian Pulisic’s penalty kick celebrated in extra time, giving the US a 3-2 win over arch-rivals at Empower Field, Mile High in Denver, Colorado on Sunday.

Tv footage and videos posted on social media showed Mexico fans throwing soft drink bottles and cups at US players as they partied in front of them.

Reyna, who scored the USA’s first equalizer at the start of the game to briefly set the score to 1-1, lay on the floor for several minutes and had to be treated by the team’s medical staff after she suffered an apparent blow to the head A bottle of Coca-Cola was hit.

The person responsible has since been identified by security footage and was arrested on Monday, banned from future events at Empower Field and will be prosecuted. Four other spectators were arrested for trespassing.

“While the night featured Denver as a world-class soccer destination and Empower Field at Mile High as a premier sports and entertainment venue, the actions of some patrons unfortunately took some of it from a memorable event,” stadium officials said in a statement released Monday evening.

“In addition to evicting several people for violating the fan code of conduct, our security staff worked closely with the Denver Police to deal with the five people arrested – four for trespassing and one for throwing projectiles.

“The person arrested for throwing an object on the field of play has been identified by security footage as being responsible for the injury of a US player. This patron will be banned from all future events at Empower Field at Mile High along with a criminal charge . ”
