“It is a matter of respect and political decency. We will wait for all pending legal issues to be resolved. We do not want to be reckless. We must respect the autonomy of other countries,” Obrador said, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Sunday (8/11/2020).
His decision was motivated by his experience when he ran for president for the first time in 2006, at which time Felipe Calderon was elected president of Mexico. “The votes are still counting and some foreign governments have recognized the self-proclaimed winner, there is no legal decision, and Calderon is congratulated, that’s reckless, and we won’t do that,” he said.
Obrador said Mexico had no problems with either Joe Biden or Donald Trump and stressed that he had a good relationship with the two men.
“I met Biden several years ago. We had a conversation where I gave him a letter describing our work for Mexico. “Also read: Amazon, Microsoft to Facebook Boss Congratulations to Biden-Harris)
He was referring to 2012, when as a candidate for president of Mexico, Obrador met Biden, then the US Vice President. The letter detailed the problem of soaring violence in Mexico and its energetic and migration policies.
On Trump, Obrador said Mexico enjoyed a mutually beneficial and respectful relationship with the US president. “Trump has a lot of respect for us; he doesn’t interfere in the affairs of our country, we made a good deal together,” he said.
