Metropolis of Lyon to Create Seventh District Heating Network in South-West Lyon – 100% Renewable Energy – Coriance Group

Elected officials from the Metropolis of Lyon decided this Monday to create a seventh district heating network in the south-west of Lyon. The future network, the construction and operation of which has been entrusted to the Coriace group, will be one of the largest 100% renewable heat networks in France.

The Metropolitan Council of January 29 approved the creation of a new network district heating in south-west Lyon by the CORIANCE group, a new public service concessionaire which will build and operate this network. The development of heating networks, vectors of local and renewable energies, is an essential pillar of the energy transition policy of the Metropolis of Lyon. This new heating network will serve the perimeter of the municipalities of Oullins-Pierre-Bénite, Saint-Genis-Laval and La Mulatière.

The Metropolis of Lyon aims to double local production of Renewable and Recovery Energy (EnR&R) by 2026. To do this, it is continuing the development of urban heating networks with the ambition of reaching 200,000 equivalents. housing connected to a network by 2026, compared to 95,500 in 2021.

Currently, the metropolitan area has seven urban heating and cooling networks: Center Métropole; Vénissieux; Vaulx-en-Velin/Grande Île; Lyon – La Duchère; La Tour-de-Salvagny; Givors; Rillieux-la-Pape. The Métropole launched the extension of the Center Métropole heating network to Saint Priest in December 2023, and decided to create a hot and cold network in the Saulaie district (Oullins) in the summer of 2023. It was necessary to continue the development of the networks by creating a new network covering the perimeter of three municipalities: the new merged municipality of Oullins-Pierre-Bénite, Saint-Genis-Laval and La Mulatière.

The CORIANCE offer retained by the metropolitan council presents the following strong points: ambitious development of this new network: 14,500 housing equivalents, 38km of network, approximately 140 GWh per year of heat delivered. The renewable energy and recovery rate will be 100%. The dealership is committed to a high level of quality of service and continuity of service. The future boiler room created in the La Mouche area in Saint-Genis-Laval will be of high architectural quality. The future installation will make it possible to offer a competitive heat rate for users and relatively stable compared to electricity and gas prices. Connection rights will be optimized to ensure prices are among the most competitive in the Metropolis’ networks. Part of the energy will be provided by the optimized recovery of waste energy produced by the Oullins-Pierre-Bénite wastewater treatment plant.

The duration of the public service delegation is 25 years with an effective date of March 1, 2024. Work will begin in 2024 for the first heat deliveries to be commissioned at the end of 2025.
