Police arrested a member of a mass organization in Bekasi, West Java, with the initials VVL (49) after going viral calling ‘Stupid Betawi People’. The perpetrator was arrested by the police while karaoke at Slawi, Central Java.
“The police are looking for information and when they arrived at Slawi, they were arrested while they were doing karaoke,” said the Bekasi Metro Police Chief, Kombes Aloysius Suprijadi, to reporters on Monday (18/10/2021).
Kombes Aloysius said the perpetrator tried to escape after a video of his racist swearing went viral on social media. Now the police are still investigating the perpetrators intensely.
“Currently the person concerned is being investigated at the Bekasi City Police Station,” said Kombes Aloysius.
The police ensnared VVL with Article 16 in conjunction with Article 4 of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 40 of 2008 concerning the elimination of racial and ethnic discrimination and/or Article 335 of the Criminal Code. He faces up to five years in prison.
Early From Viral Cases
This case began with a video of a mass organization in Bekasi allegedly insulting the Betawi Tribe that went viral on social media. The incident is said to have occurred on Wednesday (13/10) night.
From the video circulating, it can be seen that the perpetrator reprimanded a young man. From that conversation, it was heard that the problem originated from the problem of the project stall.
“Say, you’re playing games in this project, I stabbed. Tell Gondo, from the cave of Venus,” said the man.
The man then uttered insulting words to the Betawi tribe.
“You bring all Betawi people here, Betawi people are stupid, I said,” said the man.
