Metropolis of Lyon. The flare at the Feyzin refinery produces a huge black cloud

“Apparently ecology, pollution and respect for the people of Lyon are not the concerns of the managers of the Feyzin refinery,” says Didier, who contacted Progrès, with supporting photo, to show an immense and threatening black cloud rise from the Feyzin refinery.

Taken this Sunday, December 3 shortly before 1 p.m., from the Signal de Saint-André in the Lyonnais mountains, the photo impresses as much as it terrifies by its scale.

Activated at 12:30 p.m.

On the TotalEnergies side, we confirm that the flare was activated from 12:30 p.m., and is responsible for this plume of smoke.

“A safety device was activated, so we had to stop the compression of some of our products transformed into gas. This gas, which we could not store or send to our customers in these conditions, was therefore sent to the flare,” explains a spokesperson for the company, contacted by Le Progrès.

The weather, extremely cold, dry and clear, did not help matters, making the plume made up of “CO2, water vapor, and soot” particularly visible.

The unit has restarted and a few episodes of flare activity are expected in the meantime. Return to normal expected by this Monday afternoon.

Already last Tuesday, the flare was activated as part of an installation restart.

The Feyzin platform is one of TotalEnergies’ nine European refineries. Each year, it processes nearly 5 million tonnes of crude oil.
