Argentine star Lionel Messi surprised everyone by excluding his country among the candidates for the World Cup in Qatar 2022.
“The nominees? The big teams are like Brazil, Germany, France, England and Spain, and I’m sure I’ve forgotten some of them too,” the Paris Saint-Germain player told Direct TV.
He added: “But if I wanted to keep only one or two candidates, I would say that Brazil and France are the most important candidates to win the World Cup.”
Messi explained: “France, unlike the last European Cup, which did not go well, have great players and the same coach for a long time, as does Brazil.”
Interestingly, Messi had confirmed long ago that the World Cup in Qatar is the last World Cup tournament he will play in his football career.
Messi qualified with Argentina for the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil, which they lost to Germany 0-1.
