The Mercedes championship team deployed the DAS for the first time during the pre-season tests, causing a significant crackdown. The system allows riders to move the steering wheel away from each other and thus change the toe-in of the front wheels. By adjusting the geometry, the friction of the tires is reduced and thus their wear.
“The commissioners consider the DAS to be part of the procedure, albeit unconventional. It does not break the rules on suspension,” the jury said after the night meeting. According to the rules, the suspension must not change during driving.

They welcomed the decision in Mercedes. “We think we’re right. We’ve had a lot of discussions with the FIA, so we have it in the car. Disputes and other views on technical innovations have always been part of Formula One. That has to be taken into account,” the German team boss said in protest Toto Wolff.
Representatives of the Austrian stable accepted the decision. “We wanted a clear position. We didn’t get what we imagined. We still have our doubts,” Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko told ORF.
Mercedes will attack the seventh title among teams and drivers this season, which starts with a long delay due to coronavirus. Friday’s introductory training in Spielberg was dominated by six-time champion Brit Hamilton and Fin Bottas.
