Mental health: 3 pieces of advice validated by science

American researchers give us very concrete advice to take care of our mental health in this difficult period …

Between the coronavirus (and its many variants), health measures (the curfew, the mask …) and concerns for the future (employment, education …), the morale of the French is clearly not looking good. According to a survey carried out by Inserm and the University of Bordeaux, the French are now more anxious than in 2014: depressive symptoms have skyrocketed in particular among women, young people and seniors.

Researchers at Binghamton University (in the United States) looked specifically at the factors that have an impact (positive or negative) on the mental health of women aged 30 and over. “We worked with a group of 880 women and found a strong link between a balanced diet, regular physical activity, healthy lifestyles and stable and positive mental health.“explains Lina Begdache, main author of this work published in the Journal of Personalized Medicine.

In detail, American researchers offer recommendations (concrete and easy to implement) to improve daily mental health:

  • Avoid fast food (and foods hyper-rich in sugars, fats and salt),
  • Do not skip breakfast (and favor a healthy breakfast, with proteins and seasonal fruits),
  • Avoid excess caffeine during the day (be careful with tea, coffee and energy drinks),
  • Eat a diet low in sugars (and skip foods with a high glycemic index),
  • Consume more fruits and vegetables (especially green leafy vegetables: spinach, cabbage, broccoli …),
  • Exercise every day (at least 20 minutes).

To know :exercising daily (at least 20 minutes without stopping) probably offsets the negative impact of fast food and excess sugars on mental health“say the scientists, who point out that environmental factors have more influence on the mental health of women than on that of men.
