JAKARTA – Not only women, breast cancer can also affect men. In fact, this disease affects about 350 men every year in the UK. One in 1,000 men in the UK will develop the disease in their lifetime.

“Symptoms breast cancer the most common in men is a lump behind or near the nipple. Though the lumps may not always be in this area, ”said Barr, founder and chairman of Prevent Breast Cancer and consultant.

There are other warning signs of this disease, including discharge from the nipple that is stained with blood. Some men have sore nipples, or have tender or inverted nipples. There may be ulceration or swelling in the chest area or swelling of the lymph nodes under the arm.

“Age is the most important risk factor for breast cancer in men,” said Barr. (Also read: Mother, don’t forget to take care of your health)

The risk increases with age and most men diagnosed with breast cancer are over 60 years of age. “Your risk is also higher if you have a significant family history of the disease. So talk to your doctor if you are concerned about this,” advises Barr.

Furthermore, Barr revealed how obese people have higher levels of the hormone estrogen in their bodies. This condition can play a role in the growth of breast cancer cells, as can chronic liver damage and Klinefelter syndrome.

The NHS says the condition – also referred to as KS or XXY – occurs when a male is born with an extra X chromosome. Where women are born with two X chromosomes and men are born with X and Y chromosomes. Chromosomes are the sex cells that determine the genetic sex of the baby.

Affecting about one in every 660 men, Klinefelter syndrome (born with the XXY chromosome) can cause subtle symptoms throughout a person’s life. Symptoms are so mild that many people may not even realize they have the condition. (Also read: SuperM’s New Album Sits 2nd on the Billboard 200 Chart)

In toddlers, baby boys take longer to sit, crawl, walk and talk, appearing more calm and passive. In childhood, mild dyslexia or dyspraxia may be seen, or difficulties with writing, spelling, and attention.

Adults with this condition may experience low sex drive and may be infertile.
