The campaign Melanie Witzke and her brother practically inherited their love for this sport. The 20-year-old feels comfortable with VT Kempen in grown relationships, brother Luca prefers his career and is a national player.

The handball players of VT Kempen are unstoppable this season. With 26:0 points, the team of coach Jürgen Witzke leads the table in the national league. On Sunday (4.30 p.m., Jahn-Halle) there will be a top game against third-placed TSV Bocholt, who are four points behind. One of the top performers at VT Kempen is 20-year-old Melina Witzke.

Once VT Kempen, always VT Kempen. Despite numerous offers from other and higher-class clubs, Melina Witzke, who was born in Kempen and grew up in St. Hubert, has remained true to her home club. “In the end I decided to continue playing handball with my friends. I’ve been playing with some of them since we were youngsters,” reports the right-hander.

Melina Witzke comes from a handball-crazy family. Mother Birgit herself played at TuS Lintfort and made it into the 3rd division. She later decided to focus on her professional career and played for VT Kempen for a few more years. Father Jürgen always played for Hueler SV and later became a coach. Among other things, he also trained his son Luca at Hueler SV, where today’s national player started. Today father Jürgen is coach of the women’s team of the VTK; before that he also trained the female offspring.

Luca Witzke even made it into the Bundesliga. “I’m damn proud of him. But of course he had to do without a lot when he was young,” says his sister. “He already knew exactly what he wanted and what step he wanted to take next.” Today Luca Witzke is under contract with Bundesliga club SC DhfK Leipzig and is a member of the national team. He played two international matches at the European Championships in Slovakia and Hungary before being stopped by a corona infection.

Bringing VT Kempen to where it used to be – that is the goal that excites Melina Witzke. On Sunday you could play and win the 13th game this season. At HSV Wegberg there was a narrow 30:27 win at the end. With 26:0 points, VT Kempen confidently leads the table. The team has a four-point lead over second TuS Lintfort II (20:4 points) and third TSV Bocholt (18:4). Nine games are still on the schedule until May 7th, first the top game on Sunday against TSV Bocholt.

“After we were not able to get promoted last year due to the official end of the season, we naturally want to get promoted to the Verbandsliga this year,” says Melina Witzke. “But of course the Verbandsliga shouldn’t be the end of the road. Sooner or later we’re aiming for the Oberliga or North Rhine League.”

The 20-year-old has not yet had any successes in seniors. But she was already quite successful in the youth field, winning the Lower Rhine Championship with the A youth of the VT Kempen. “But the West German runners-up championship with the C youth was also a great success for us, as was the Bundesliga qualifier, which we completed with the A youth back then, even though we narrowly failed,” reports the 1, 69 meter tall backcourt player who is completing a dual degree at a Düsseldorf bank.

Whenever there is a chance, she goes to Leipzig – often with her father Jürgen and mother Birgit – to visit and support her big brother. “Leipzig is always worth a trip and of course we want to see as many Luca games as possible live. Unfortunately, due to the corona virus, this was only possible to a limited extent in the past two years. ”And of course her brother also uses every opportunity to watch his sister’s game live in the Kempen Jahn-Halle.
