The Donald Trump administration is trying to blame Beijing directly for the Covid-19 pandemic, ahead of the US presidential election on November 3.
Pompeo has led an international campaign for other countries to avoid China, including its technology.
However, Japan insists the talks are not aimed at one country. The Japanese Foreign Ministry said the talks also touched on “the situation in the East China Sea, South China Sea and North Korea”.
