The participation of Sharjah National Oil Corporation comes as part of its educational project on the effects of carbon emissions, which aims to enhance education and awareness of the importance of achieving the goals of zero emissions and protecting the environment for a sustainable future. Dr. Rana Sabouni, Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the American University of Sharjah and the organizer of the meeting, said that this meeting aims to open the doors of cooperation with industries to explore key technological solutions to reduce carbon emissions, which is part of AUS’s efforts to spread awareness across society about the procedures. that can be taken to change our lifestyles for a better and sustainable future for our planet, which of course supports the UAE’s goals to achieve zero emissions by 2050.

The meeting included presentations by specialists from the Sharjah National Oil Company, during which Khamis Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of Operations, discussed the strategies of the UAE, the Conference of the Parties (COP 28) and the action plan towards achieving carbon neutrality, while Rowad Barzanji, Head of the Operations and Safety Team, discussed the action plan of the Petroleum Corporation Sharjah National Council to achieve its goals towards carbon neutrality by 2032. As for Firas Beshr, Operations Engineer, he spoke about the global agenda and the quest to reduce emissions by 45% to maintain the target of 1.5 degrees Celsius in 2030 and reach zero emissions by 2050. Obyagiello Tausa presented, Health, Safety and Environment Officer and Responsible for Managing the Zero Emissions Education Campaign at Sharjah National Oil Corporation. A comprehensive overview of climate change, the impact of human activities on it, the effects of climate change and the circular economy approach for societies to achieve zero carbon emissions.

Hatem Al-Mousa, Executive Director of Sharjah National Oil Corporation, said: Sharjah National Oil Corporation organized public sessions with local universities and various partners to spread a message about the importance of action to confront climate change, to be like a beacon of influence that would spread the message among different communities about the global agenda to address climate change.

The meeting also included a panel discussion on the role of the oil and gas industry in achieving net zero emissions, the social and economic impact on zero carbon commitments, and the role of society in building a circular economy that manages production and consumption to face climate change.
