Rectors and authorities of 6 universities, both public and private, made known the careers most chosen by young Panamanians, highlighting medicine and architecture.

Meanwhile, the president of the Association of Private Universities of Panama (AUPPA), Adriana Angarita said that “we have a very high concern in school dropout.”

He noted that “for every 12 students who start in the preschool phase only two graduate at the university level.” He added that “this puts us in a very wide challenge to close the gap, because every student who loses the system is a loss for everyone.”

Angarita, rector of the University of the Isthmus, said that the costs of careers is not one of the reasons why young people do not study. The president of AUPPA added that “Panama is one of the lowest university costs in the entire region in terms of higher education.”

The University of Panama

The director of admission of the University of Panama, Ricardo Turner, said that “of the people who make the process are probably 24 thousand people, 90% of that group may be making the whole process.” Additional said that “the career where there is more competition to enter and in fact are the most registered students registered are medicine, business administration and architecture.”

Santa Maria University (USMA)

The director of the Entrance System of the Technological University of Panama, Arnulfo Chong, said that “we expect 4,391 new students to enter the UTP this year 2020.” He also said that the most popular careers in engineering are “civil, industrial and electromechanical.” As for the degrees, “logistics and multimodal transport, software development and marketing and international business”.

Chiriquí University (Unachi)

According to Etelvina Medianero de Bonagas, rector of the Autonomous University of Chiriquí (Unachi), this year “the student population has had an increase, the number of 6,196 students is enrolled for the first time”. On the most popular careers chosen by students in this house of higher studies, Medianero said they are “medicine, architecture, nursing, criminal investigation and biology.”

Metropolitan University

At the Metropolitan University of Education Science and Technology (Umecit) is “enrolling around 3600 new students nationwide,” said rector José Alberto Nieto Rojas.

The rector explained that the careers most chosen by the students are “criminalistics, maritime and port administration, in the area of ​​social sciences, banking and finance, marketing.” He said that “physiotherapy has gained a lot of strength.”
