Measurement of Tritium Concentration in Sea Water Around Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Begins

Kyodo News reported that Japan’s Ministry of the Environment started sampling today (25th) to measure the concentration of tritium (tritium) in sea water around the nuclear power plant for the first time since the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean.

According to the report, the Japanese Ministry of the Environment plans to publish tritium data every week for 11 sea areas within a radius of about 50 km from the Fukushima nuclear power plant for the next three months.

The seawater analysis results of the survey launched today are expected to be released the day after tomorrow.

Experts plan to contact TEPCO through the Nuclear Regulatory Agency if tritium levels exceed 700 becquerels (㏃) per liter at a point within 3 km from the nuclear power plant and 30 ㏃ per liter at a point further away.

Minister of Environment Akihiro Nishimura said in a statement yesterday after the discharge of contaminated water into the ocean, “We will thoroughly conduct surveillance activities with high objectivity, transparency and reliability so that rumors do not arise.”

Apart from environmental performance, TEPCO has also begun analyzing seawater around the nuclear power plant, and it is known that the first sample measurement results since the start of discharge will be released as early as this evening.

TEPCO plans to secure and analyze seawater samples every day from 10 locations within a 3km radius of the nuclear power plant for the next month, and announce the results the next day.

Kyodo News said, “As China completely bans the import of Japanese fishery products, agitation is spreading among officials.” Tritium concentration data in the waters around the nuclear power plant has become important to prevent the spread of rumors and persuade China and Hong Kong.
