Iconic ‘Black Sheep’ Wool Sweater Worn by Lady Diana to be Auctioned on Sotheby’s: A Fashion and Royal History

An icon of fashion and royal history is about to make a comeback. The iconic ‘Black Sheep’ wool sweater, worn by Lady Diana in 1981, will soon be auctioned on Sotheby’s website, reports actu.fr. The event will take place from August 31 to September 14, during a sale entitled “Fashion icons”, dedicated to clothing treasures.

The history of this sweater dates back to the beginnings of the “Warm and Wonderful” brand, founded in 1979 by designers Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne. In June 1981, Lady Diana captured the attention of the whole world by sporting this original sweater, adorned with white sheep, except one, which is black. A black sheep among the white herd… A bit like the princess, often lonely within the royal family, some observers analyze. Still, the mere appearance of this sweater on the princess was enough to propel the brand’s notoriety.

Le Black Sheep voit double

The popularity of the Black Sheep has even sparked new trends. Many brands were inspired by it to produce similar models, until 2020, when Rowing Blazers, directed by Jack Carlson, will even solicit the creators of the sweater to obtain a license and reproduce the pattern of the famous black sheep. Both a witness to history and fashion, the Black Sheep thus opens a window on the past while retaining its timeless character… Modern!

Having stained it in 1981, shortly after buying it, Lady Diana sent the sweater back to its designers. In a letter from Buckingham, the princess asked them for repair or replacement. Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne then rushed to make a second copy. It is therefore Lady Di’s first sweater, the one that was damaged, which is now up for auction, after Joanna Osborne found it last March in her attic. After careful examination and extensive comparison with the 1981 photographs, Sotheby’s has indeed confirmed the authenticity of the sweater. For the moment, no price has been communicated, but it’s a safe bet that the auctions are likely to climb.
