“When I became mayor of this city, I was shocked by the intensity and destruction of old and new,” Lamers said in his speech. “And actually I have to be scared again this year. But you almost get used to it. It sometimes seems to be normal. Our tolerance limit is apparently high, we seem to accept it more easily in Schiedam. And we have to keep watching, because it is unacceptable. “

“It is an event that got out of hand and would not be licensed in a normal situation. The great interest in the fireworks shows proves that there is an attractive alternative. So I call on the cabinet and the House of Representatives to stop this tradition that has passed away and put an end to consumer fireworks. ”

30,000 euros damage

According to Lammers, much larger incidents in Schiedam were prevented during New Year’s Eve by the preventive measures and actions that were held prior to New Year’s Eve. These measures almost halved the damage compared to the previous New Year. The damage now amounted to approximately 30,000 euros.

“Prevention is good and shows that intervention is needed in advance. But that of course also costs money and time. And that should not be necessary at all,” the mayor said.
