Mayon Volcano Eruption in Philippines Displaces Thousands, Causes Respiratory Infections: Health Department Reports

MANILA – At least 1,624 people were displaced as a result Mayon Volcano in the Philippines have reported acute respiratory infections, according to the Philippine Department of Health.

As reported by Xianhua, Monday (17/7/2023), Deputy Health Secretary Enrique Tayag said health authorities in Albay province reported that several people in temporary shelters were suffering from coughs, colds and sore throats.

“There are increasing cases of coughs, colds and sore throats among refugees,” Tayag told a press conference. However, he added that there was no outbreak of respiratory infections in the evacuation center.

Authorities have evacuated nearly 19,000 residents along a six-kilometre stretch at the foot of the volcano, about 500 km southeast of Manila since the recent increase in seismic activity that began on June 8.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology maintains an alert level around the volcano at three of five.

The volcano continues to threaten residents, preventing them from returning to their homes.

Residents who have lost their homes are now being accommodated in 27 government shelters.

“A dangerous eruption in a few weeks or even days can still happen,” experts warn.
