Maxim Gullit after AZ debut: ‘I’m sure my father is proud’ | NOW

Maxim Gullit is happy and proud after his debut for AZ on Thursday in the Europa League match against Rijeka (4-1 win). The nineteen-year-old central defender, the son of Ruud Gullit, was allowed to enter the AFAS Stadium in the ninetieth minute.

“It was a very nice moment. I did not see it coming, but I am very happy with it. I will cherish this, it is great,” said Gullit after the victory over the Croatian club against AZ TV.

Gullit had not looked at his phone at the time of the interview. “So I don’t know what kind of message my father sent, but I’m sure he is very proud of me.”

The Dutch youth international, who is also the great-nephew of Johan Cruijff, made the switch from the Amsterdam amateur club AFC to the AZ youth academy in 2015. He already made his debut in professional football in April 2019, but then at Jong AZ.

Gullit has been a basic player for the team from Kitchen Champion Division for some time now, but is also regularly selected for the main squad. He may make his Eredivisie debut next Sunday in AZ’s home game against RKC Waalwijk.

In addition to Gullit, seventeen-year-old Yusuf Barasi also made his debut for AZ against Rijeka. The striker also came in in the final phase.
