Maverick Viñales (Yamaha / 2nd): «We still have ideas»

Maverick Viñales was satisfied with the second overall time after two training sessions: «I felt really good today, especially in the morning, when the grip level was very high and I was able to set very good lap times without problems. In the afternoon we had to try a lot of things, especially the electronics. We tried to improve under these conditions. I felt pretty good, better round after round. Especially at the last exit we tried something and the lap times were really good on used tires. »

Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement, the 2019 World Cup third is convinced: «We still have some new ideas for tomorrow. But we don’t want to stray because I think our bike is working well, on a lap it is fantastic. So we will continue on the way. »

In terms of top speed, the Yamaha drivers are still at the end of the field. The 25-year-old Spaniard does not want to be too impressed by this. «Sure, it’s something we have on the slip. But we also have something here that we want to try in this regard. But we have to work with what we have and get the most out of every lap: we have to highlight the advantages of our motorcycle. We handle the tires well, that’s a point on our side. I’m also pretty happy with the second session, it wasn’t easy with the heat and the wind – and I felt good with a lot of fuel. Sure, it will be difficult with the top speed, but I also think that I accelerate out of turn 5 quite well. It will be difficult to overtake there because I have a lot of grip. »

The start will be the key, the two-time winner of the season in 2019 believes: «It will be very important to be on the front row – whether on 1, 2 or 3 doesn’t matter. Then it will also be important to push in the first laps and try to keep a distance. With the low top speed it is always difficult in the fights. »

While Valentino Rossi complained about problems with the rear tire, his teammate emphasized: «I had no problems with the tires, I’m very happy about that. It will be a bit difficult to choose the mix for the race, but I feel good with both combinations. The bike works fantastic. »

By the way: Viñales has to do without an Öhlins technician who was unable to leave Australia in time. “It’s a shame because Patrick is an important part of the team, who always has good ideas for the race. But it’s the way it is. The boys work well and I like our system with the headphones because I hear them better and I can explain things better because the background noises are eliminated. I think we can continue to use that in the future. »
