An American ten-hundredweight bomb from the Second World War was found on a construction site on Kennedy-Ufer in Cologne-Deutz. As the police said, the unexploded ordnance was uncovered during excavation work and then secured, as the city of Cologne reports on its website. The bomb is no longer to be defused this Monday evening, it said.
The defusing should take place on Tuesday morning. There will be considerable restrictions for rail travelers. The city speaks of “difficult soil conditions” at the site. The city set an evacuation area of 500 meters in the evening. An evacuation affected 15 residents, an old people’s home and the RTL and ntv buildings. From 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, those affected are asked to leave their homes.
Especially the Deutzer train station will have a significant impact on the defusing: From nine o’clock until the defusing is complete, there will be no rail traffic, the entire station must remain evacuated, it said. Traffic across the Hohenzollern Bridge, on the other side of which is Cologne Central Station, will also be completely blocked for the duration of the defusing. The closure also affects all shipping traffic and airspace, writes the City of Cologne.
The Cologne Opera in the State House is also affected, and there is no play during the disarming process. The city cannot yet say exactly how long the defusing will take: the period also depends on how quickly the evacuations can be completed.
