Armed kidnappers have taken a large group of students from a school in Kuriga, northwestern Nigeria. According to the school principal, 287 children have been kidnapped.

The perpetrators attacked the children during the opening hours of the school. At least one child was injured by a gunshot wound. Some students were later able to flee or were released.

The kidnapping comes a few days after a group of more than 200 women and children were abducted while gathering wood in the northeast of the country.

Ransom

It is not yet known who is behind the kidnappings, but mass kidnappings are becoming more common in Nigeria. In 2014, more than 200 schoolgirls were abducted by Islamic radicals in the town of Chibok. The kidnappings are often intended to demand ransom from parents.

“We will do everything we can to ensure that every child comes back,” the governor of Kaduna State promised concerned parents. “We are working together with the security services for this.”
