Maryland Funeral Shooting Leaves One Dead and Two Injured, Unrelated to 10-Year-Old Victim of Gun Violence

Two people were shot and one was killed in a shooting at a Maryland funeral. The funeral service involved a victim of gun violence just 10 years old, authorities said.

The shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon, June 6, at the Washington National Cemetery in Prince George’s County, according to a report from ABC News.

Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, Prince George’s County Police Mayor David Blazer said that Authorities received “numerous calls” regarding a disturbance at the cemetery shortly after 1:15 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, police found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was later pronounced dead.

“The adult female is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at this time,” Blazer said.

David Blazer added that the individuals were “not directly related to the 10-year-old girl’s funeral” and that police believed the shooting was a dispute “totally unrelated to what was going on with the funeral.”

Blazer confirmed that one person is in custody following the shooting and said authorities are “investigating the circumstances of that arrest to see if it’s related.”

The names of the victims and the name of the alleged shooter were not released. The police also did not confirm whether the funeral could take place after the incident.

According to the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department, 10-year-old Arianna Davis was shot on May 13 while riding in a car with her family in Northeast Washington. He died three days later, on May 17, authorities said.

A reward of up to $45,000 is being offered to anyone who may have information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Speaking after the 10-year-old girl was confirmed dead last month, Chief Robert J. Contee III called the situation heartbreaking.

“It breaks my heart,” he said, according to a report from The Washington Post. “As long as we have the conversation about people dying as a result of illegal firearms in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them, then we have a lot of work to do.”
