Does Uefa make St.Gallen a master?

The Corona virus has a firm grip on Europe. The voices that believe that the crisis will soon be over are getting quieter. More and more experts assume that football will not return to normal as quickly – and that the 2019/2020 championship will no longer be able to be played to the end. Even if the EM were postponed to next year.

What happens then? As in Swiss ice hockey, will no team become champions? Or will the championship be frozen with the current standings and can those teams that are now in front be happy? According to the Spanish sports newspaper “As”, the case for Uefa is obviously clear. If the championships can no longer be played to the end, the current leaders should receive title honors. The European Football Association wants to propose this to its 55 member countries tomorrow at a video conference.

That means: FC St.Gallen would be Swiss champions for the third time after 1904 and 2000, because at the moment they are tied but with the better goal difference just ahead of the second placed Young Boys. He should therefore take part in the qualification for the Champions League in summer – if it can then be played again.

One thing is clear: Uefa wants uniform criteria to guarantee “fair conditions” for qualifying for European competitions for the next season. And according to the Spanish sports newspaper, it refers to a historical example. Because the championship in the rest of Yugoslavia had to be canceled ten laps before the end because of the Balkan War in 1999, the Partizan Belgrade team won championships at the time. This scenario could now be repeated in all European countries.
