Marvel star accuses the MCU hypocrisy · KINO.de

In an interview, Anthony Mackie, known at the MCU as Falcon, spoke of his frustration with Marvel Studios’ lack of diversity behind the scenes.

Warning: Spoilers to “Avengers: Endgame” follow.

Actually, you’d like to think that Marvel Studios can’t be blamed for diversity. The studio, which celebrates huge success with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has major and minor roles with actors from different ethnic backgrounds and pays attention to a balanced mix of important male and female characters.

But Marvel Studios of all places accuses Anthony Mackie of a lack of diversity. The 41-year-old actor plays the role of Sam Wilson alias Falcon in the MCU, who receives the round shield from Steve Rogers alias Captain America at the end of “Avengers: Endgame”. Mackie will soon be appearing together with Sebastian Stan in the Disney + series “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier”.

What’s next in Marvel Phase 4 of the popular MCU? We know it:

Anthony Mackie: “We have to ask these questions”

But Mackie doesn’t criticize the cast in front of the camera, but rather processes behind the scenes that the audience can only see on screen in the form of credits and therefore hardly perceive. He highly commended those responsible for Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige that key positions such as directing, camera and costume design would also be given to non-white filmmakers. For example, Ryan Coogler directed the hit “Black Panther”, “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings” was directed by half-Japanese Destin Daniel Cretton and Scarlett Johansson’s solo appearance in “Black Widow” was directed by Cate Shortland. But that’s exactly where he sees the problem, he said in the Variety series “Actors on Actors” with Daveed Diggs:

“With ‘Black Panther’ you have a black director, a black producer, a black costume designer and a black stunt choreographer. And I think that’s more racist than anything else. Because if you can only hire blacks for a film with blacks, doesn’t that mean that they are not good enough for a film with mostly white casts? ”

You have to agree with Mackie. In fact, non-white filmmakers were only hired when it came to producing films with non-white main characters. The previously mentioned MCU films “Black Panther” and “Shang-Chi And The Legend of The Ten Rings” are good examples of this approach. Mackie had played in enough MCU films in which every important position – from director to producer – was only filled with whites. And he also has a good suggestion on how to go about it in general:

“Hire the best person for the job. Even if that means getting the two best women on board or the two best men. ”

He is not afraid of a ruffle or even serious consequences for his future in the MCU, because he is in a position that allows him to ask uncomfortable questions and Mackie probably also sees it as his duty.

Recognize all MCU characters from their costume? No problem for fans. Or?
