Japan: Succeeding Hashimoto Seiko Marukawa as Minister of Olympic Games
On February 19, Beijing time, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has selected Marukawa Zhu to replace the new Tokyo President Seiko Hashimoto as the Japanese Olympic Minister in 2020. This is the first time that the cabinet of Yoshihide Suga has changed cabinet officials when he came to power last September.
Marukawa is a former TV announcer, then a politician, and a legislator of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. She served in this position under Suga Yoshihide’s predecessor Shinzo Abe from 2016 to 2017.
She took over the position vacated by Hashimoto, who was appointed today as the head of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee.
Hashimoto’s resignation as Olympic Minister paved the way for her to rise to the top position in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Yoshiro Mori, who caused public outrage by making sexist remarks against women last week, resigned. The 56-year-old Olympic bronze medalist Seiko Hashimoto replaced the chairman of the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee.
Hashimoto was appointed as the Olympic Minister in the reorganization of the cabinet led by Abe in September 2019.
According to a report by the Nikkei, Suga Yoshihide expressed the hope that Marukawa would “strive to achieve a safe and reliable Olympic Games with the concept of young women.”
Marukawa’s appointment means that two of the top Olympic positions in Japan are now held by women.
In the World Economic Forum’s 2020 Global Gender Gap Report, Japan ranks 121 out of 153 surveyed countries, and 80% of the Tokyo 2020 Executive Committee are men. Therefore, Japan’s efforts in gender equality face criticism.
