President Martin Vizcarra responded this afternoon to the query about the request made by the regional governor of Arequipa, Elmer Cáceres Llica, para que Russia sell them or done 100 thousand vaccines.
“Arequipa does not require 100,000 vaccinations, but much more, “said the president. He explained that a region like Arequipa with more than a million inhabitants requires between 600 thousand and 700 thousand vaccines and the National Government is working to guarantee that endowment.
“We cannot let go, in an improvised way, a figure, a number or a procedure that does not fully comply with security procedures. The vaccine has to be proven safe, “said Vizcarra.
Regarding the Russian vaccine, the president pointed out that the are evaluating as one more possibility along with the rest of laboratories worldwide.
“We have to guarantee the vaccine for all regions at the national level, and we are going to do it including the analysis of the possibility of the Russian vaccine, but together with all the laboratories that are in the process of analysis and coordination through the commission that has been established for this purpose, ”he said.
Last August 11, Cáceres Llica, sent a letter to the Russian Embassy requesting access to the Russian vaccine, the document reads:
“I request you approve us to access the acquisition of the dose of the most effective COVID-19 vaccine “SPUTNIK” in the amount of 100,000 or as you consider (…), we appeal that our region be considered for the reasons stated above and affirm us its valuable contribution which will be rewarded under the protection of the right to life of my fellow citizens (…) ”.
Seven days later Igor V. Romanchenko, Russian ambassador, responded to the regional authority indicating that the commercial sale of the vaccine is carried out only through the Russian Fund for Direct Investments.
For its part, Minister of Health, Pilar Mazzetti, explained that the acquisition of vaccines in the country is only through the Ministry of Health and that for the entry of vaccines it depends on international organizations.
“Any vaccine that enters our country must have the approval of two agencies important: the FDA in North America and EMA in Europe, With this, the World Health Organization guarantees the quality of the vaccine and enters the country through the Ministry of Health ”, Mazzetti highlighted.
