Marseille Drug Trafficking: 48 Dead and 118 Injured in the Bloodiest Year

Drug trafficking has never claimed so many victims in a single year in Marseille, in Bouches-du-Rhône. Shootings increased day and night in the Marseille city, and left no less than 48 dead and 118 injured, according to information from Franceinfo. No district of the city was spared by these news items. “Two years ago, what we heard in our collective was, as long as it happens in the northern neighborhoods, that it’s between them”confides Laëtitia, member of a collective of victims. “Now the situation has changed. […] They come to shoot at a neighborhood. […] They don’t look anymore, they shoot”she laments.

Three quarters of shootings since January are linked to a vendetta between two enemy clans

At the end of October, several hundred Marseillais took to the streets to make themselves heard, believing that a new milestone had been reached in the violence. Indeed, Soucayna, a student, was killed while she was in her room, in the 10th arrondissement. A bullet had struck her in the mouth after passing through a wooden plywood located at the bottom of the bay window. During 2023, four people who had no connection to drug trafficking were shot dead. A vendetta between two enemy trafficking clans is believed to be at the origin of these deadly bursts. Three-quarters of the shootings since January have been linked to this conflict.
