Mario Götze (28) shot himself in the history books of football as a national player in Rio in 2014 when he landed the decisive goal in the final.

He also experienced glorious times at Borussia Dortmund. However, his second farewell from the Ruhr area was not a glorious one.

The 28-year-old was bid farewell to Borussia Dortmund at home against TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday, June 27th. Without jersey! Götze was not in the squad.

Family is a priority for Mario Götze

The reason for this is Mario Götze’s young family. After he and his wife Ann-Kathrin became parents earlier than expected on June 6, the new dad primarily wanted to be there for his new family. After the dramatic premature birth, Götze simply had to set priorities.

Because of the strict DFL Corona hygiene rules, Götze was not allowed to train with the team because he had been to his wife’s hospital several times to help her.

Götze trained individually to keep fit, and could have been used after two negative corona tests by trainer Lucien Favre (62). But it did not get to that.

Mario Götze: Only one full-time game
