Margno (Lecco), 29 June 2020 – «In hoc vinces», “in this sign you will win”. It is the inscription on the large iron cross on top of Monte Croce di Muggio, 1,799 meters high, one of the most spectacular panoramic points of the Valsassina from which you can overlook Lake Como and together you can see the Grignone. That’s where Mario Bressi the unsuspected 45-year-old family man from Gessate, on Friday afternoon took 12-year-old twins Elena and Diego on a trip before killing them. Maybe he had already premeditated everything, or even he didn’t know about the atrocity he would have committed, but the iron cross to which Diego clung, spreading his arms almost to take off and Elena showing her thumb raised as a sign of victory now appears now as a funeral monument.
After the walk dad Mario, Elena and Diego they went back to Margno’s grandparents’ apartment, a three-room apartment on the first floor of a residence in front of the Pian delle Betulle cable car station: they showered, emptied their backpack, had dinner, tidied up the dishes and the kitchen together, then brother and sister went down to the courtyard to play and a bicycle ride back and forth in the driveway of the condominium, until 9.30 pm, when the sun went down and the darkness fell, they returned home alone without the need for anyone to call them back to order. They brushed their teeth, put on their short-sleeved pajamas and shorts and slipped into their beds next to each other. How much the father waited to kill them is unknown, it is assumed a couple of hours. In the meantime he has mandator two messages that bode nothing about what would happen to his wife Daniela Fumagalli, of his own age: nothing important, nothing alarming, just a couple of communications.
While the two children slept soundly it was rash on Diego and choked him pressing a pillow on his face, holding it still with the weight of his body. Then it was the turn of Elena, who perhaps woke up and that is why he strangled it with his own hands, leaving the bruises of his fingertips under his neck under which he perceived his fading life.
“They were completely blue in the face, never seen anything like this,” confirmed one of the first responders who intervened first the next morning when it was too late. Once the double infanticide was completed, Mario sent a third stringed Whatsapp message to Daniela, this alarming yes: “You will never see your children again, you will be alone forever.” So he posted on Instragram the photos of the last trip to the mountains with the twins and he clung to the iron cross on top of Monte Croce di Muggio and went to kill himself, jumping from the 97 meters of the Vittoria bridge in Cremeno.
