For the first time, director Marta Herts met Marta Hertz, historian and founder of the Jewish museum in Latvia, in 2017.
Their conversation lasted for six years and now a film has been made.
The life story of Margers Westermanis is unique, he is one of the few survivors of the Holocaust of WWII. How is it possible to live a fulfilling and purposeful life after all that has been endured?
Touching on a painful period in Latvian history, the film is not just an individual story about Marħera Vestermani. It’s a story about a person’s place after a tragedy, about how what happened changes him and those around him. And this is also the story of us today.
Although the film goes through the most difficult times in the fate of Latvian Jews and Marģers Vestermanis, it is also life-affirming, because Marģers gained strength and energy to continue in his family and academic work.
The film is about the human respect and self-respect that permeates Westermans research on Jewish saviors and in a way provided a language through which the Latvian people can understand and start talking about the fate of the Jews.
