Argentine football is known for being hot-tempered.
That prejudice came true last night when several Boca Juniors players collapsed after the loss to Atletico Minerio in the Copa Libertadores.
A video on social media shows former Manchester United player Marcos Rojo facing several blows against a security guard.
During his time at Manchester United did Marcos Rojo known as an angry and tough defender. Since 2021, he plays his football for Boca Juniors in his native Argentina, and not much has changed in Rojo’s behavior.
Last night, after Boca went away against Atletico Mineiro on penalties in the Copa Libertadores, he got angry. Together with several teammates, several security guards from Mineiro were attacked. A video on social media shows Rojo and teammate Carlos Izquierdoz facing several blows.
Arrested by police
According to Argentine Clarion the chaos after the match in Brazil must have been total. Security police are said to have used tear gas, fences were destroyed and Mineiro’s president is said to have thrown water at the Boca players.
In the end, the police were able to arrest eight players and leaders, including Rojo. They must have been detained until late at night.
– It’s always like this in Brazil. You throw bottles and defend yourself, said Vice President Juan Roman Riquelme, referring to the actions of the police.
The background to the anger was a VAR decision made in the second half. A Boca goal was doubtfully ruled out, and Atletico Mineiro could eventually win on penalties.
