March 13: Gretzky collects his 900th point

1984 : Wayne Gretzky amassed 900 career NHL points when he scored a goal and an assist in the Edmonton Oilers 6-5 overtime win over the Quebec Nordiques at the Coliseum.

Gretzky gets his 900th point in his 385th NHL game to become the fastest player to reach that plateau in league history. He scored his 82nd goal of the campaign at 8:44 of the first period before preparing for Paul Coffey’s goal at 4:35 of extra time.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

1938 : Carl Liscombe had the fastest hat trick in NHL history (at this time) when he hit the target three times in 1:52 in the Detroit Red Wings’ 5-1 win over the Black Hawks of Chicago at Olympia Stadium. The rookie forward record will hold until March 23, 1952, when Bill Mosienko hits the target three times in 21 seconds, an NHL record that has yet to be broken.

1954 : Camille Henry of the New York Rangers sets an NHL record with four power play goals in a game. Rookie forward’s big night against Terry Sawchuk sees the Rangers beat the Red Wings 5-2 at Olympia Stadium. His record has been tied seven times, but has never been broken.

1966 : Glenn Hall of the Black Hawks becomes the second goaltender in NHL history to sign six 30-game seasons. His 30th triumph of the 1965-66 season came when he made 29 saves in Chicago’s 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Chicago Stadium.

1971 : At the age of 35, Johnny Bucyk of the Boston Bruins hits the target in a 6-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks at the Pacific Coliseum to become the fifth player in NHL history to collect 100 points in a season. Three of the five players to do so (Bucyk, Phil Esposito, Bobby Orr) reached the plateau with the Bruins. Bucyk ends the season with 116 points (51 goals, 65 assists).

1976 : Billy Reay becomes the most successful single-team coach in NHL history. He won his 501st regular season victory with the Black Hawks as they beat the Minnesota North Stars 4-1 at the Met Center. Reay is ahead of Toe Blake, who had won 500 victories at the helm of the Montreal Canadiens.

1987 : The Washington Capitals tie the NHL’s record for power-play goals in a game when they hit the target seven times on the five-man offense in a 10-2 win over the Maple Leafs at Capital Center. Washington holds a 3-2 lead after two periods, then scores seven goals in the third, including six on the power play. Four of those six goals come as Maple Leafs defenseman Bob McGill sits in the penalty box on a five-minute major penalty for battling with 3:08 to go in the game.

1999 : Phil Housley overtook Joe Mullen to become the leading US-born scorer in NHL history when he collected three assists in the Calgary Flames’ 5-4 overtime win over the Capitals. Those three assists give him 1,066 points, three more than Mullen.

That same night, Raymond Bourque overtook Bucyk at No. 1 in Bruins history in terms of games played. He is in his 1437th game, a 3-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabers.

2001 : Mark Recchi becomes the 60th player to reach the 1000 point plateau. He achieved the feat by scoring the first goal of the game and setting up two more for the Phialdelphie Flyers in a 5-2 triumph over the St. Louis Blues at the First Union Center. Recchi was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017.

2003 : Ron Francis of the Carolina Hurricanes joins Gordie Howe as the only players in NHL history to collect at least 50 points in 22 straight seasons. Francis hit the 50-point mark when he collected two assists in a 5-3 loss to the Flyers. He finished the season with 57 points (22 goals, 35 assists) in 82 games.

2017 : The Flames defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in a shootout at the Scotiabank Saddledome for their 10th straight win. Kris Versteeg scores the only shootout goal. The Flames join the Blue Jackets (16 in a row), Minnesota Wild (12) and Flyers (10) to make 2016-17 the first season in which four teams achieve a streak of at least 10 wins consecutive.

2019 : Connor McDavid Record three assists for the Edmonton Oilers in a 6-3 loss to the New Jersey Devils at Rogers Place to reach the 100-point plateau in a third straight season.
