Marcelo says it makes no sense to repatriate Portuguese infected with nCoV-2019

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says that he has been in contact with the family of Adriano Maranhão and considers that the most important thing is to do medical monitoring in Japan.

“Apparently what is said is that first you need to have an exact notion of the situation and it has to be in Japan. Bringing it to Portugal could be a shame for him. There is no point in taking that risk,” said the Head of State , on the fringe of a visit to the Podence faces, in Trás-os-Montes.

For the President of the Republic, the Portuguese authorities have to “pressure as they have done permanently with diligences that allow not only to get to know the situation better, but, if possible, to deal with a possible transfer to a hospital unit”.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa argued that transferring to a hospital “would naturally be preferable because it is there that analysis can be done, which elsewhere is more difficult”.

The President said that he spoke to the sick Portuguese woman on the cruise ship, and that she understood “the situation where it makes no sense to bring her husband to Portugal”.

“It is known that the dialogue with the Japanese authorities has to be respected for a possible transfer to a hospital”, he stressed.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reported that the woman had, however, received information from the Minister of Health that, after finishing the night in Japan, an attempt would be made to assess the situation to ascertain whether there will indeed be conditions for the transfer to a hospital.

The President also indicated that there was also contact with the ship’s captain, and said that he understands that the situation “must be very complicated”, with so many different cases.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also said that the Portuguese authorities are making all contacts to resolve the problems pointed out by the Portuguese.

“Let’s see how it is managed, it is not very easy. The situation is perhaps the most complicated, a ship with so many people, an autonomous unit anchored in the territory of a state that also has to manage what is going on” , he stressed.

The President also assured that Portugal has no “news of any more cases to date”.

Japanese authorities confirmed today that Portuguese Adriano Maranhão, a plumber on the ship Princess Princess, docked at the port of Yokohama, Japan, tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The Covid-19 coronavirus appeared in December in Hubei, in central China, a country where 76,936 cases are recorded at the continental level, 2,442 of which are fatal.

Below the 10 registered cases, there are the United Kingdom and Canada with 9, the Philippines and India with 3, Russia and Spain with 2 and Lebanon, Israel, Belgium, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Cambodia, Finland and Egypt with one case each.
