D66 wants to close Rotterdam The Hague Airport

Unlike various other left-wing parties, such as GroenLinks and the Party for the Animals, D66 does not want to close the airport as quickly as possible, but wants to phase it out gradually. The doors of the terminal must be locked by 2040 at the latest.

By taking a little more time for the closure, D66 wants to ensure that there are enough alternatives available. Member of Parliament Jeroen Heuvelink explains in the AD that he is not only thinking of more train connections, but also of a hyperloop.

“We cannot continue like this. The airport causes a lot of noise nuisance in the surrounding neighborhoods, as well as a lot of CO2 emissions,” says Heuvelink. That is why, as far as D66 is concerned, there is no future for the Rotterdam airport.

Although political support for ‘Zestienhoven’, as the airport is popularly known, is crumbling, Rotterdam Airport is very popular with travelers. Last week was known that the airport is the first Dutch airport to have fully recovered from the corona crisis.
