Māra Saulīte honed her javelin throwing talent with the legendary coach Valentīna Mazzālītis and her success is recorded as a brilliant achievement in the history of Latvian athletics, but especially javelin throwing.

In 1963, Māra Saulīte became the Latvian champion for the first time. However, her achievements peaked in 1969 and 1970. In 1969, the Latvian record belonging to Inese Jaunzeme was corrected for the first time – in the competition in Poland 56.28 m.

In 1970, at the first start in Ogre, the new record is already 56.74 m. Exactly 1970 was the culmination of Māra Saulīte’s success – the USSR champion and victory in the then prestigious USSR-US match. Māra Saulīte took the longest shot of her sporting life – 57.28 m – in 1971.

Māra Saulīte connected her whole further life with medicine, working as a nurse.

All Latvian athletics friends express their condolences to the relatives of Māra Saulīte.

The farewell of the departed will take place on September 10 at 14.00 in the crematorium.
