2.5 million vaccinations are planned for June. That’s about one shot per second. But not everywhere is the same speed. There are regions where it is now the turn of 30-year-olds, such as in the vaccination centers in Roeselare, Bilzen, Genk, Hasselt and Antwerp. That while in other places they are already a few birth years further. In many places, young people in their twenties are currently getting a shot for the first time. In Voeren, Limburg, they are currently even at birth year 2001. But there is a logical explanation for this. In theory, the municipality belongs to Tongeren in terms of vaccination. But because that is a serious distance for many people, because Voeren is a municipality with facilities, they work there with a mobile vaccination center.

But they also set impressive vaccination figures on the coast. Blankenberge (where it was the turn of the year of birth 1994) was briefly Flemish frontrunner with a full vaccination coverage of about 50 percent, while more than 75 percent had already received at least one shot. In Knokke-Heist (birth year 1996) young people in their twenties are currently being invited. “But we now also test people between 2000 and 2002,” says coordinator Kristof Demeulemeester. “We even encourage 16-year-olds to register. It’s simple: anyone who uses Qvax now will almost certainly have a vaccine here within two weeks. For every thousand slots we vaccinate, at least 150 are filled via the reserve list.”

Many vaccination centers are therefore convinced that they will probably meet the deadline of 11 July, the target date of Flemish Minister of Welfare Wouter Beke (CD&V) to give everyone aged 18 or older a first shot. Although in some places, due to delivery problems, the target is July 21.
