Many witnesses to the shooting of a confused man: ‘Made quite an impression’

Several residents of Honselersdijkstraat in New West saw this afternoon how the police chased and eventually shot a confused man. Despite resuscitation attempts, the man died.

One of the witnesses tells how the officers tried to talk to the man. ‘That was in English and in Dutch. The police said really, come out, we want to help you. ” According to the police, he had a knife with him and threatened to injure himself.

Exciting situation

Ruben Koops, reporter for Het Parool, was also a witness. ‘At one point the gentleman started walking in the direction of the police. The police had already drawn the weapons. Quite an exciting situation. He walked up to the officers. Another cop with a dog tried to stop him. That somehow failed. And very shortly afterwards, shots rang out. ‘

‘I got out of my house right away,’ says a local resident. ‘My first reaction was of course, wow, where are my kids. And then I saw a lot of police. ‘

Shout

Koops was also shocked. ‘Everyone could look at it like that. It’s a very tough situation. And that gentleman was shouting and screaming very loudly. So that made quite an impression. ‘

The deceased man was 23 years old and is a German national. The National Criminal Investigation Department is investigating the case.
