There are still barracks in the Blue Mosque in Mazar-e Sharif. Nearly 7,000 people, most of them men, have gathered to pray Friday prayers. The women are hidden behind a purple curtain. Many may have come to hear Governor Qudratullah Hamza give the latest news from the Taliban.
He enters the mosque wearing a traditional costume and a large black turban, a short machine gun hanging over his shoulder. The weapon is placed at the feet. Qudratullah sits down in a chair and starts talking.
